Notes from the Importer: With a father like the beloved and famous Jean-Louis Dutraive it does not hurt the eldest son in his quest to find his own voice amongst the vines and rolling hills of the sleepy appellation of Beaujolais. With the region gaining much attention from wine geeks worldwide due to the versatility of the wines (for dining or just flat out drinking), the camaraderie of the vignerons is unparalleled. There is a young, energetic group with easy access to top vineyard sites and everyone is cheering each other on. Following a childhood bred on his father Jean Louis Dutraive’s incomparable winemaking in Beaujolais, harvests in Oregon and Australia, and internships with family friends, Justin decided to start his own path.
“La Madone” is perhaps the best-known expression of Fleurie coming from the highest hillsides of the appellation. Wines from here are known for their delicate aromas; La Madone is no exception. Named for the chapel of the same name, the vineyard overlooks the village of Fleurie. The fruit from Justin’s wine comes from the mid-slope vines, or pied d’aroux, of La Madone, owned by his mother.
